It was Eubie Blake, the great ragtime pianist and composer who said, "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself."  Fortunately, Blake continued to perform until he was 99.  While there is little one can do to prevent some diseases, many can be prevented, delayed, or minimized with a few healthy lifestyle changes. Here are a few suggestions to immediately improve your health!

Arthritis affects almost half of all seniors and is a leading cause of disability. According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 100 types of arthritis, but the most common type affecting older people is Osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones” is a condition that causes bone to become thinner and weaken. Weakened bones are susceptible to fracture and in the elderly population, hip fractures can be particularly dangerous. Of the 9 million Americans affected by osteoporosis, about 80% are women. While osteoporosis is common, it is not part of normal aging. Here are a few things you can to protect you bones:

Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease affects more than a third of all people between the ages of 45 to 54 and increases with age. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. but a healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk by as much as eighty percent.

  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Maintain an appropriate body weight
  • Exercise regularly for 30 minutes or more each day
  • Keep your blood pressure under control with medication and a healthy diet

Memory Loss
